The recommended solution to diminishing vigor and impending death was resignation coupled with an effort to achieve closure in practical affairs and personal relationships. Given that nothing could be done to prevent or retard aging, this focus made sense. Rather than fretting about the inevitable, one could aim for peace of mind.

After hearing a story about Foursquare’s co-founder, Dennis Crowley, walking into a press event in athletic wear and eating a banana, I developed a theory that bubbles might be predicted by fashion: when tech founders can’t be bothered to appear businesslike, the power has shifted too much in their favor.

Believe it or not, this goes deep into the interior mentality of the engineer, which is very truth-oriented. When you’re dealing with machines or anything that you build, it either works or it doesn’t, no matter how good of a salesman you are. So engineers not only don’t care about the surface appearance, but they view attempts to kind of be fake on the surface as fundamentally dishonest.

He once explained to a colleague: “it’s impossible to tell you what I’m going to do except to say that I expect to make the best movie ever made.”

The movie was obviously never made, but he got as far as writing a complete screenplay, which is an amazing read.

If Deadmau5 was Moby, this would be his Play. Which is to say, four or five awesome songs and a bunch of really competent songs. Also the analogy doesn’t hold quite as strongly since dubstep has very little appeal for car commercials.

Standouts, in the order in which I love them:

Animal Rights

Raise Your Weapon (This deserves special mention for the awesome bait and switch they pull two-thirds of the way through)

Some Chords

Sofi Needs a Ladder

The full mix is on Youtube.

"As a side note, data caps are actually a very poor way to manage demand and limit Internet..."

“As a side note, data caps are actually a very poor way to manage demand and limit Internet congestion. All of the costs of supplying residential broadband are for supporting the peak loads, typically Sunday nights for residential customers. Bandwidth consumed off-peak is completely free; it literally has no marginal costs. If ISPs really wanted to limit their costs and congestion, they would limit speeds at peak times. But if their goal is instead to increase revenue, then making consumers pay $1 or more per gigabyte is an excellent strategy.”

- Netflix, Inc. In the procession came trumpeters, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses.
